DMIS Part 2 is a set of programming interfaces (APIs) that enable a commercial vendor to create an Open Architecture CMM software package. It provides a standardized way for CMM software packages to share information, and to control a CMM, using DMIS.
Part 2 makes it possible for different CMM programs to work together, much like the Windows® API allows many different programs to work together. There are many different ways that DMIS, both Part 1 and Part 2, can be implemented. There are no libraries or DLLs on the DMIS Part 2 CD; however, a sample Part 2 software system can be downloaded from this link.
DMIS Part 2 uses object-oriented technology to build on DMIS bringing true plug-and-play capabilities to new and existing CMMs. Based on the DMIS Part 1 standard, DMIS Part 2 is designed to also interface with other standards. It provides a true plug-n-play environment for measurement software, with extensible math support and remote monitoring. Part 2 provides the most advanced object-oriented solution for total factory integration of CMM equipment.
The objective of DMIS Part 2 standard is to define a collection of object interfaces, based on DMIS Part 1, that provide interoperability between DMIS client applications, a DMIS server, and DMIS mathematics and equipment modules. This DMIS part standard also documents the behavior of each object interface in the context of DMIS Part 1. The DMIS server and DMIS modules are essentially black boxes that hide vendor implementation details from the calling application. The documented interfaces provide a window into those black boxes, enabling access to and control of the implementation using the capabilities defined in DMIS, without requiring a knowledge of the implementation details. Therefore, conformance to this DMIS part standard enables a DMIS component to plug-and-play with other conforming DMIS components.
